How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal uses advanced laser technology to target the pigment (melanin) in hair follicles. The laser emits a concentrated light beam absorbed by the follicle, generating heat that damages it and reduces future hair growth.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Does Laser removal work?

Laser hair removal therapy does work, but it rarely achieves permanent hair removal but Laser treatment can significantly reduce hair growth, nevertheless.

After the first treatment, many people will only be hair-free for a few months. The hairs will eventually grow back, though they are often finer, lighter, and less likely to be noticed than before.

Many people will require multiple sessions to achieve a more permanent or satisfactory solution to unwanted hair. The hair may grow back lighter and thinner with each subsequent session. After enough treatments, it may stop growing back altogether.

Laser hair removal may also be more effective on dark hair. People with blond, reddish, or grey hairs may not notice much of a change, as laser lights are attracted to dark hair and are often not successful on light hair. In this case we can use electrolysis to target grey, blonde, and orange hair. Refer information on our page for electrolysis.

2. Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal significantly reduces hair growth, with many clients achieving long-lasting results. So permanent hair reduction is assured. Clients can achieve anywhere from 80% to 90% hair reduction. These results will be influenced by certain conditions such as skin, hair color and hormones. We advise maintenance visits after the initial treatment period.

3. Does it hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as a mild snapping or warmth. Our lasers are designed for comfort and include cooling features to minimize discomfort.

4. How long will my treatment take, and how many treatments will I need?

Every Laser Hair Reduction treatment, like every client, is unique. The number of sessions depends on the desired treatment area and the condition of your skin.

The time the treatment will take depends on the size of the area to be treated. Some treatments can be as quick as 5 minutes, and others can take up to an hour.

On average, we recommend 8-10 treatments for effective permanent results. Some clients may require additional treatments, depending on the individual, hair type, skin tone, and the area being treated.

Treatments should be repeated every 4-6 weeks depending on the hair growth rate. Different body parts grow hair at different rates. For example, hair on the face may grow quicker than hair on your legs.

5. Can anyone get laser hair removal? Can all skin types be treated?

Yes! Our advanced technology is suitable for all skin types.Candela Laser Hair removal systems offer effective laser hair removal treatments on the widest variety of skin and hair type.

During your consultation, we’ll assess your suitability and advise you on the number of treatments for permanent hair reduction, while improving skin quality and revealing silky smooth skin, to ensure the best results. We will even do a test patch if required, we will not turn anyone away unless we do a test patch, and ensure it will work for you!

6. Can I get Laser Hair Removal on areas that have tattoos?

No, areas with tattoos cannot be treated with laser. If you are thinking of getting tattoos and you would like the hair area to be free of hair, we suggest you do a complete session of laser hair removal, to minimize the hair growth in that area.

7. Are there any side effects?

Mild redness or sensitivity is common but temporary. Laser hair removal is popular with people wanting a solution to hair removal that is more permanent than some other methods. Using lasers to remove hair works by stopping the hair follicles from growing new hairs. Before embarking on the therapy, however, people should make themselves aware of some side effects of laser hair removal, as well as some myths that surround the process. For most people, laser hair removal is a safe way to get rid of hair in unwanted places almost permanently or for long periods of time.

Our expert therapists will provide aftercare guidance to ensure your comfort.

8. What areas can be treated?

We can treat virtually any area, including the face, legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, chest, and back.

9. What Precautions Should I Take Before and  After my Treatment?

To maximize results and to reduce the risk of adverse skin reactions the following activities should be avoided for at least 2-4 weeks prior to treatment:

One- Two days before your treatment please shave, trim the treatment area. The shorter hair will ensure optimum results and reduce unnecessary discomfort.

Immediately following laser treatment, the treated area may be red and swollen for several hours. This can be calmed using Aloe Vera gel and an Ice Pack.

Adorn laser Clinic is also a stockist of Skinstitut, ASAP and Medik8 products and can offer a competitive price on after care LaserAid crème and Aloe Vera gel.

Hair will generally take up to 10 -14 days to fall out after treatment.

After the treatment you may resume your normal day to day activities; however some clients may experience some redness. This should not be prolonged but until this subsides, be nice & gentle on your skin keeping it nice & cool. Avoid any activities that may irritate your skin.

In general the following activities should be avoided until all redness has subsided:

Fake tans can generally be applied 24-48 hours after treatment. However, the next scheduled treatment should also be considered when deciding to do particular activities or using certain products; Note that enough time needs to have lapsed before proceeding with the next treatment. Eg: fake tans, sun exposure etc.

10. Is Laser Hair Reduction Treatment Safe?

Yes, laser treatments have been used for many years for a variety of medical and cosmetic procedures. Adorn Laser Clinic uses the latest CANDELA GentleLase system , the most trusted name in the industry. It has pioneered the development of some of the safest and most effective technologies and products available on the market today.

The majority of people who use it find that laser hair removal is safe and well-tolerated. There do not appear to be any long-term health risks associated with the procedure.

However, some people may experience minor side effects after laser hair removal. If in any doubt, we can always do a FREE small test patch and see if your skin reacts to the treatment before having it done on a larger area of skin.

People wishing to have laser hair removal treatment should always use a fully-qualified Therapists.

11. Should I be receiving Laser Hair Reduction treatment if I am on medication?

There are certain medications that can affect the treatment. The most common are Roaccutane and Retin A. These medications can cause pigmentation to occur during treatment. We recommend not starting Laser Hair Removal treatment until at least 8 weeks after finalizing the course of your medications and with the consultation of your doctor. Through your initial consultation we will go through and consult with you about any of the medications you are taking if any.

12. Can I do Laser hair removal during pregnancy?

Experts do not recommend laser hair removal for people who are pregnant. This is because scientists have not carried out any human studies that prove the safety of laser hair removal during pregnancy.

Pregnancy causes hormonal changes in a person’s body. This can commonly cause extra hairs to grow in unwanted places. While this growth can be embarrassing, the hairs often go away on their own.

If the hairs do not go away unaided, a person may want to try laser treatment after their pregnancy. Doctors may ask them to wait a few weeks after giving birth before they have the treatment.

13. Does Laser hair removal cause infertility?

Again, there is no evidence that laser hair removal causes infertility. The lasers only penetrate the skin and do not reach or affect any other organs. Laser hair removal is usually safe, even in sensitive areas such as the groin.

14. What is the difference between Laser and IPL?

IPL stands for ‘intense pulsed light’ and has some branded variations such as SIPL, VPL, SPL which are all essentially the same technology. IPL machines are not lasers. IPL devices are generally cheaper than laser devices, which is why many clinics choose to use them. These machines produce a wide bandwidth of traditional light that can heat up all of the surrounding tissue. IPL lacks laser’s ability to produce a selective bandwidth of light that will only affect the hair shaft making it less effective in disabling hair and putting the skin at a higher risk for side effects.

IPL generally requires more treatments (sometimes double or triple the treatments) or may only reduce the thickness and darkness of the hair, rather than eliminate it completely. Generally, true hair removal lasers (i.e. Alexandrite, Diode, and ND:Yag types) tend to achieve superior results for unwanted hair treatment.

15. Does Laser hair removal cause cancer?

The myth that laser hair removal therapy can cause cancer is unfounded. The lasers are specially designed to pass through the skin cells and target only the hair follicles deep within the skin.

The lasers used in laser hair removal do produce a small amount of radiation. However, this radiation is not thought to be harmful, and there is no evidence that laser hair removal therapy causes skin cancer.
